Walruses are believed to have evolved millions of years ago and are the only living pinniped with external tusks.
Their sight and sound are impressive, but their smell is unforgettable. Tusks of large walrus bulls may be up to 3 feet long and weigh up to 11 pounds each. They are used to pull themselves out of the water, fight for dominance, and display.
They are very social and usually found in groups (however, if they're in twos playing in the water, there is likely hanky-panky going on.) Be especially sensitive to mothers with calves.
Swimming walruses may attack if threatened.
